Tips to Prevent Car Sickness in Dogs

Tips to Prevent Car Sickness in Dogs

Tips to Prevent Car Sickness in Dogs Like humans, dogs can get motion sickness while traveling. If you've ever had a sick dog in your car while driving, you know how unpleasant this can be. 4Knines offers the best dog car seat covers, so if your dog does become sick, the cleanup is easy. Below, we'll offer some tips on how to prevent car sickness in dogs. Shop our best seat covers for dogs online today! Time Your Dog's Meals If you know that your dog suffers from motion sickness, avoid feeding your dog right before you go on a car ride. In fact, it's best to feed your dog several hours before a long car ride, which gives them time to digest their food and to go potty as well.  Offer Up Air Flow Fresh air can help eliminate any feelings of nausea your dog may be experiencing. Plus, all of those yummy smells that dogs can smell and humans cannot will serve to distract your dog from feeling sick. Crack a window while driving to help with nausea. Condition Your Dog To Car Rides One great idea to help calm your dog's nausea is to gradually acclimate them to car rides. You can start off by taking short trips around town and then build up the time they spend in the car. This may take several weeks to do, especially if you are planning a long road trip. Invest in Dog Restraints Any type of dog restraint can help with motion sickness. This prevents your dog from moving around as much, which can upset their stomachs. 4Knines offers dog seat belts, which are adjustable, so you can have your dog stay in one spot. Our dog car barriers help, too. PARTNER WITH 4KINES TODAY It's always a good idea to be prepared for when your dog does have an accident or vomits. March 2022 Charity Spotlight: SNAFU Rescue

March 2022 Charity Spotlight: SNAFU Rescue

March 2022 Charity Spotlight: SNAFU Rescue SNAFU Rescue (Short Noses And Friends United Rescue) is dedicated to Rescuing, Rehabilitating, and Rehoming short-nosed dog breeds in need. The SNAFU Rescue team, comprised solely of volunteers, works to raise money to remove dogs from commercial breeding systems and from commercial breeder dog auctions while also assisting with the costs of necessary veterinary care and spay/neuter costs. When needed, SNAFU Rescue also takes in short-nose breeds from owner-surrender situations and shelters. Meet Bernie. Born with a severe heart condition, Bernie was facing congestive heart failure and a short life. But thanks to Bernie’s foster family, a pro-bono veterinary consultation, and the HUGE fund-raising efforts of SNAFU Rescue, Bernie was able to receive life-saving surgery on March 30th and is recovering nicely. Just 24 hours after his surgery, Bernie was eating, drinking, and greeting every passerby with a wigglebutt.    Located mainly in the Midwest, SNAFU Rescue rehabilitates short-nosed dogs taken into their rescue and facilitates the adoption of eligible dogs. When space is not available, they coordinate with a network of other rescues and/or place dogs in need with vetted foster families. Nationwide adoptions are available provided the approved adoptive family is willing to travel to SNAFU Rescue to pick up their dog. If, for any reason, they are not able to keep the dog, they must agree to return their adopted dog to SNAFU Rescue or to the original foster home at their own expense. In 2021, SNAFU Rescue rescued nearly 100 dogs and 35 are still in foster care today. Many dogs have medical issues requiring costly medical care. 4Knines is proud to support SNAFU Rescue with a cash donation and by donating a variety of 4Knines products to their upcoming silent auction, taking place on the SNAFU Rescue Facebook Auction page from April 28 through May1. We hope you will consider supporting this nonprofit group by participating in the auction or donating directly to SNAFU Rescue.

5 Ways to Spoil Your Puppy on National Puppy Day

5 Ways to Spoil Your Puppy on National Puppy Day

5 Ways to Spoil Your Puppy on National Puppy Day For starters, we need to state the obvious: no dog is ever too old to be called a puppy. So whether your puppy is 6 months old or 6 years old, they deserve some extra attention on National Puppy Day, March 23, 2022. Here are some pawsome tried and true ideas on how you can spoil your puppy! 1. Extra Playtime Spending quality time with your dog is the best way to show them love and appreciation. Give your dog an extra long belly rub, play a game of fetch, provide tons of kisses, and spend some time training with them. If you have more than one dog, be sure to give each of them individual attention that is catered to their needs.  2. Go for a ride What dog doesn’t love a breezy ride in the car? Roll those windows down and let them sniff the wind. Don't forget your car seat cover and dog seat belt! 3. New Toy Since you’re already in the car, why not hop over to your favorite pet store and let your dog pick out a new toy? This one’s guaranteed to please. 4. Go for a Hike or Visit the Dog Park Stretch those legs and get ready for new smells on the trail! A long walk in nature is a wonderfully enriching activity for your dog (and you!). Be sure to bring poop bags, fresh water and a bowl. The dog park is a great option if you don’t have any trails nearby, and will allow your dog to socialize off-leash to their heart’s content. 5. Puppy Massage Giving your dog a long massage after a romp at the park or long car ride is a great way to strengthen your bond with them and soothe their sore muscles. Top it off with a good brushing (if your dog enjoys that).  National Puppy Day is a great reason to celebrate your favorite furry friend. February 2022 Charity Spotlight: Paws and Stripes

February 2022 Charity Spotlight: Paws and Stripes

February 2022 Charity Spotlight: Paws and Stripes Helping dogs, helping heroes. The mission of Paws and Stripes is to provide animal assisted therapy to military veterans with PTSD, MST, and TBI using rescue dogs; saving lives, two at a time. Their vision is to see veterans and their dogs living without isolation.  Paws and Stripes was founded in Rio Rancho, NM in 2010. Lindsey Kay was motivated by her passion for dogs and the love of her country and those who have sacrificed so much to protect it. A family member of Lindsey’s suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and a traumatic brain injury researched multiple organizations but was unable to pay for service dogs due to the high cost. Lindsey decided to start an organization dedicated to providing service dogs at no cost to veterans in order to fill this critical unmet need for veterans. In 2010, Paws and Stripes graduated with their first team, Jim and Sarge. In 2012, Paws and Stripes first officially integrated a mental health component to our training programs.  The Paws and Stripes team provides equal access to all qualified veteran applicants through a variety of services and support programs. The Companion Animal Program is for individuals who are looking for a well-trained pet, as well as access to other resources. The Service Dog Program is for individuals who need support regarding their disability on a day-to-day basis. The Pawsitive life group is a veteran support group for survivors of suicide and suicide loss. Since inception almost 10 years ago, Paws and Stripes has served veterans, rescued and rehabilitated shelter dogs as service dogs, and refined their mental health programming offering bond-based training to veterans for free. Their program has drawn veterans from New Mexico and around the country. Unfortunately, the cost of service dogs for veterans is not typically covered by insurance companies. Privately, the cost of a dog and its training ranges from $10,000 to $60,000. Paws and Stripes provides these services for free, at no cost to the veteran to enroll. Please join 4Knines in supporting the mission and vision of Paws and Stripes. There are SO many ways to help including making a financial contribution, celebrating the life of a beloved person or pet with a memorial gift, donating your time and skills, or shopping the Paws and Stripes online store.

9 Facts You Need To Know About Canine Dental Health

9 Facts You Need To Know About Canine Dental Health

9 Facts You Need To Know About Canine Dental Health 4Knines Staff  •  2/10/22 Does your dog’s breath keep you from having quality snuggle time? If your dog hasn’t had a teeth cleaning in a while (or ever), keep reading. Dog owners often overlook the early warning signs of dental disease because they think ‘stinky dog breath’ is just something dogs inherently have. Dental problems can cause, or be caused by, other health problems so be sure to have your vet do a thorough checkup at least once a year. Here are 9 facts you need to know about protecting your dog’s teefies so you can be the best advocate possible for your dog’s health. 1. Dental disease begins early in life. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says that by the age of three, most dogs have some degree of dental disease. The early signs of dental disease in pets include bad breath, yellow tartar buildup on the teeth, and red and swollen gums. 2. Regularly brushing your dog’s teeth is an excellent way to prevent plaque buildup. You can ask your veterinarian about what toothpastes and brushes are best. Never use human toothpaste, which can contain ingredients like xylitol that are toxic to animals. 3. Daily chewing activities can also be effective in maintaining oral health. Chewing is the natural way for dogs to clean their teeth as the act of gnawing scrapes plaque off of teeth.  4. Advanced dental disease can cause serious problems. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), early detection and treatment are critical, because advanced periodontal disease can cause severe problems and pain for your pet, including kidney, liver, and heart muscle changes. 5. Your pet’s teeth need to be checked sooner if you observe any of the following problems: Source: AVMA Bad breath Broken or loose teeth Extra teeth or retained baby teeth Teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar Abnormal chewing, drooling, or dropping food from the mouth Reduced appetite or refusal to eat Pain in or around the mouth Bleeding from the mouth Swelling in the areas surrounding the mouth 6. Most dental disease occurs below the gumline, where you can’t see it. Your vet may require X-rays before the cleaning. 7. It starts with plaque that hardens into tartar. Doggy dental cleaning includes scaling (to remove dental plaque and tartar) and polishing, which is much like what us humans experience at our teeth cleanings.  8. Anesthesia is safe. AAHA states that before anesthesia, your dog will be carefully screened with bloodwork and other tests to ensure they are free from underlying disease. Without anesthesia, it’s impossible to obtain X-rays to see what lies beneath your pet’s gumline. It is also impossible to safely and effectively clean the teeth using those sharp instruments while the pet is awake.  9. The key is prevention. Regularly brush your dog’s teeth, use dental chews and treats, and get periodic dental cleanings by your veterinarian. It’s worth it in the long run! Our Founders’ dog, Kira, recently got her teeth cleaned. Check out the before and after!

January 2022 Charity Spotlight: H & P Animal Alliance

January 2022 Charity Spotlight: H & P Animal Alliance

January 2022 Charity Spotlight At the end of every month, we donate a percentage of every sale to an animal advocacy group. This month, we chose to donate to H & P Animal Alliance!  This month’s 4Knines spotlight charity is H & P Animal Alliance, a foster-based nonprofit working to better the lives of animals through education and action. H & P Animal Alliance works alongside other rescues to pull dogs from overcrowded shelters in south Arkansas, giving them another chance at life by finding the loving homes they deserve.  H & P Animal Alliance also transports shelter dogs to their northern rescue partners where they are matched up with forever homes. Volunteers recently completed their first big transport in their new van, saving 44 pups from Ouachita and Columbia County shelters! The dogs on this transport had been in shelters or pounds for months - some for years. H & P Animal Alliance is a small organization that operates with the help of caring volunteers and foster homes. They rely solely on donations to help with vet bills and transportation costs. The adoption process includes an application, home check, vet check, and reference check, and their adoptable dogs are completely vetted, including being spayed/neutered and microchipped. Through their low cost spay and neuter program, SNIP (Spay and Neuter Initiative Program), H & P Animal Alliance has helped over 1000 families in their community with the cost of this important procedure. They also bring a low cost clinic to their area and supplement costs - helping even more people and pets! To raise funds for their mission, H & P Animal Alliance is offering Valentine’s Day Puppy Grams on February 13th and 14th. For a donation of $25, special Valentines in the local area will receive a small bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates, and ten minutes of snuggles from an adorable foster pup. 4Knines is proud to support a variety of animal advocacy groups through our monthly spotlights. We hope you will consider joining 4Knines in supporting H & P Animal Alliance with a donation or through volunteer service. Donations can be made on the H & P Animal Alliance Facebook page via PayPal or credit card.

Ford F-150 Seat Cover Means More Adventures With Your Dog

Ford F-150 Seat Cover Means More Adventures With Your Dog

The Benefits of a Ford F-150 Dog Seat Cover Owning a Ford F150 and a dog is a recipe for adventure. It also means you’ll spend a significant amount of time cleaning your car’s interior from dog hair, mud, and evidence of a hard day’s play.  Your day out is about exploration, hiking, off-roading, swimming, and general adventuring — not about keeping your pup clean for the sake of your car.   The best way to let loose and have a good time is to protect your car’s interior with a Ford F150 dog seat cover. Let your dog run through the mud, swim in the lake, or splash in the rain knowing your car is (literally) covered. The Benefits of Truck Seat Covers for Dogs If you’re like most truck owners, you’re probably tired of bringing along old towels to throw down to keep the seats clean. Investing in seat covers, especially ones made for your car type, will go a long way towards protecting your truck for the long term.   With a dog seat cover for trucks, you have the advantage of: Protecting leather seats from claws Protecting fabric seats from spills and stains Easy cleanup of dirt, dog hair, and other debris   Not all seat covers are created equal! These are the features you’ll likely come across while shopping:   Covers with a hammock deter your pet from jumping in the front seat and safe from hitting the floorboard when you hit your brakes. Covers with side-flaps protect the sides of your seat when your pet is entering or exiting your vehicle Covers with non-slip backing keep the cover in place as your dog moves around Waterproof covers are machine washable, easy to clean, and easy to deodorize Covers that are machine washable are easy to clean and deodorize. For a 4knines quick cleaning tip check out this video. Covers with Split Technology Zippers ensure you still have access to seatbelts, cup holders, middle armrests, and fold down seats.   The Benefits of a 4Knines F150 Dog Seat Cover At 4Knines, we know that the best dog seat covers check as much of your criteria as possible. This is why we’ve gone out of our way to design new products based on the needs and requests of our customers. For example, our customers saw a need for a floor hammock for their full-size crew cabs, so we made it!   Here are some other popular items Ford owners are enjoying:   The 4Knines Crew Cab Seat cover is a high-quality Ford F150 seat cover that’s totally waterproof and designed specifically to fit the back seat of your truck.     This seat cover truly stands apart from others on the market because of a few key features. The cover is designed to allow you to fold up one or more of your seat bottoms with the cover still attached and allows full use of all of the seat belts and even the center armrest without removing the cover.    If you’re piling your friends in the truck after a day on the lake, you don’t have to worry about digging out seatbelts while keeping your F-150 seat covers on.     The 4Knines F-150 seat cover is an excellent choice for those with an active lifestyle and a deep love for their pets. It is puncture resistant to help protect seats from claws or any other gear you throw in your truck. It's UV protected, and it is manufactured with safe dyes and no heavy metals to keep your pet healthy.   Additionally, its non-slip backing and seat pockets hold it securely in place. It is also a breeze to clean. You can do everything from hosing it down to throwing it in the washing machine.   If your dog loves to jump into the front seat the second you hop out of your truck, you’re going to love the hammock feature, which connects to your front seat headrests and creates a barrier that keeps your dog in the back seat.     If you’re constantly switching between using your Ford F150 to take the dog out to the park or driving friends and family around, you’re going to love how easy this cover is to take on and off. You just slip the straps over the back headrests, tighten them, pull up the seat bottoms, slip the pockets over, and push them back down. It all takes less than a few minutes!     Although the 4Knines seat cover might look a lot like others on the market at first glance, it is set apart by the fact that the designers themselves are loving pet owners. Not to mention we’ve spent years incorporating customer feedback to create the best possible design.    If your priorities include having fun adventures with your furry best friend and protecting your truck, this seat cover will not disappoint! If you’re still not sure which cover is right for you, check out our blog on how to choose the right car seat cover.
